The Uwharrie Trailblazers organize monthly trail workdays, members-only hikes, and an Annual 40-mile Uwharrie Trail Thru Hike and Celebration.
About Us
The Uwharrie Trailblazers are a hiking club with a long tradition of building and maintaining hiking trails in the Uwharrie Mountains. Originally founded in the 1970s and called the Uwharrie Trail Club, this group has been loosely organized in some form ever since. After a decade or so of relative in activity in the 1990s-2000s, the club was re-energized in 2012 by a group of trail enthusiasts who started building a new section of trail on Little Long Mountain for The Land Trust for Central NC (Now known as Three Rivers Land Trust). In 2013 we helped, along with the Land Trust, lead the first annual thru hike of the entire Uwharrie trail, and we have worked with Three Rivers Land Trust on a thru hike and trail celebration each year. In 2025, the Uwharrie Trailblazers incorporated and is now a 501(c)3 non-profit.
In the past several years we have worked with the Forest Service, Land Trust, and Zoo Society to reconnect the historic trail from Jumpin’ Off Rock on Flint Hill Rd. to High Pine Church Rd. 8 miles of new and reclaimed trail!
The remaining gap in the original Uwharrie Trail is from High Pine Church Road north to the southern boundary of the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness through the Strieby Community.
Message From past President david craft
Greetings,
Thank you for your interest in the Uwharries. Our club is a group of volunteers who enjoy working on our trails and learning more about all the history in the area. We have nominal dues to help us with projects and only have the expectation that you can help us when you can.
We started building trail on Little Long Mountain in 2012 for the Land Trust before the Forest Service acquired the land. We are now working on closing the final gaps in the historic trail. The second to the last gap being from Jumpin' Off Rock to High Pine Church Rd. We hope to have this gap closed next year with the opening of a new trailhead on High Pine Church Rd.
Onward, as we continue our work on the Uwharrie Trail.

Club President, 2012-2024
